Welcome to the

ARCTIC ENERGY SUMMIT 2026

Arctic Energy Futures in an Era of Volatility:
The End of Business as Usual?

Luleå, Sweden | August 24-25, 2026 (Monday - Tuesday)

Travel note: this event immediately precedes CH2ESS Research Days Aug 26-27, 2026.

The Arctic is the hub of a rapid transition towards electrification, with simultaneous large-scale investments in e.g. carbon-free steel production, mineral extraction, and renewable energy systems, in addition to well-known fossil fuel resources. The Circumpolar North is thus playing a critical role as both a producer of natural resources needed for fossil and fossil-free technologies and as home for the construction of renewable infrastructure critical for energy transition. At the same time, the adverse effects of a changing climate is strongly present across the Arctic; indigenous livelihoods are under increasing pressure; while recent world events are creating tensions in trade and security relations globally as well as among Arctic states. The ongoing events and actions related to energy, security, justice, and trade are creating several goal conflicts, particularly in Arctic areas. For Arctic countries, placed in highly diverse contexts, these issues raise questions about justice, energy security, and uneven distribution of costs. Therefore, procedures to ensure information sharing and public discussion around issues such as a secure electrified and hydrogen-based energy future, mineral extraction projects, Indigenous rights, and rapid societal change are gaining more attention as pivotal to achieve public acceptance through ensuring that the transition takes place in a just, secure, and sustainable manner. The overall ambition of the Arctic Energy Summit 2026 is to provide a platform for such information sharing and discussions to increase our knowledge on Arctic energy futures in this era of volatility. The meeting will be a mix of plenary presentations, panels and time for discussions.
